The Finishing Touch Clinic in Consett, County Durham, was named Employer of the Year 2013 at a ceremony on Sunday hosted by Professional Beauty.

The award was presented by Strictly Come Dancing’s Claudia Winkleman in front of 900 people at the Park Lane Hilton in London.

Owner Susan Routledge, who employs a team of nine staff, said: “This shows that local businesses can do well in this climate and that businesses don’t have to be in large cities to grow and make a mark for themselves.

At this time of year everyone seems to be going down with repeated coughs and colds and it doesn’t seem long when you get rid of one before you have another sore throat and it all starts again. You hear people repeatedly say things like ‘don’t breathe on me…I don’t want it’ or blame being stuck in stuffy environments surrounded by sniffling and sneezing people as the cause.

Have you ever thought that the person most likely re-infecting yourself is you?

Think about it. You wouldn’t blow your nose and then smear the contents on your lips.. Yuk! or drink from a glass of a person totally laden with cold….because you would say ‘You were asking for trouble’. Yet you repeatedly re-use a lipstick that is in direct contact with previously bacteria laden lips.

One of the first things you tend to do to make yourself look a wee bit more presentable, even though you are feeling rubbish is to put a’ bit of good old lippy on’ to make you feel better….And I do mean old in some cases! How old is your Lipstick? How many times has it come in contact with your Lips in its lifetime?

The pure composition of Lipstick and lipgloss makes a huge breeding ground for bacteria due to it being dewy and moist. Therefore it is advisable to replace your lipstick regularly and most importantly discard your old ones.

The fashion and cosmetic industry constantly change trends to encourage you to have the latest shade for the newest look and therefore increasing sales for the cosmetic companies. Quite often women economise and put that winter look lipstick away, laden in bacteria, for yet another year. It can sit in your dressing room drawer for anything up to 10 months. Then low and behold after some more use be put back into hibernation again for another year!

If any of this rings true for you then please ditch those old lipsticks…if you love the lip colour so much and you think it might get discontinued, then go and by a new one and put that new sealed sterile one away until next year.

On another final note…this also applies MASSIVELY to lip balms too! When you do get coughs and colds you nearly always get dry chapped lips as a consequence, and hence out comes the lip balm. Please remember all of these creamy comforters for cracking lips are a huge breeding ground for bacteria too and even worse many get shared with friends and family and get put in the first aid kit…the worst place for it!

Don’t put yourself at risk. Please check out what you are exposing yourself to.

So here’s to a healthy you.

Hands are one of those areas that just seem to get forgotten. Your hands get the most exposure to external elements every day, yet many of us forget to give them even a little TLC.

In an ideal world, hand cream should be applied after every time we wash and dry our hands, but the hand cream never seems handy when you are in a rush, so a simple solution is to quickly rub the excess cream you apply morning and night to your face onto the back of your hands and knuckles. Most people rub this into a tissue or a towel. What a waste !

Moisturising our face and bodies give a barrier which coats the skin and helps to keep any elements out, and natural oils and nutrients the body produces to keep our skin soft and supple, locked in.

Our hands are given the roughest journey of all. They are in constant use and exposed to detergents, dirt, bacteria, air conditioning and varying extremes of heat and cold.

Although the skin is tough and robust, as we age, the skin thins, hence why veins become more exposed and lines and crepeyness appears. IT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST GIVE AWAYS OF YOUR AGE !

Next time you see a celebrity who has had a few little nips and tucks or more gentle help to stay young…have a look at their hands. Most of the time they have concentrated on their face and body and totally forgotten their poor ageing hands !

To go one step further to what we has been said, every time you exfoliate your face…use the excess on your hands and also with your face mask too. Hands love nourishment, so look after them each and every day.

On a special note. Hand creams will always be the better option for hands as these creams have a thicker more creamy texture, to leave a thicker coating and protection to the skin. Never be temped to use hand cream on your face though as the emollients are less refined and far too heavy for facial areas and can cause lines and blocked pores too. Any excess hand cream should be rubbed onto thicker textured skin such as knees and elbows to treat them too.

If your hands are showing signs of ageing faster than you would like and showing signs of age spots then their are many solutions both with our treatments and products including the new radio frequency skin tightening treatments or for home-care the Agera exfoliating kits. You can ring us on 01207 580880 for a free 15 minute consultation or call in to demo the exfoliator…it works like magic.!
